Summit Pharmaceuticals International Corporation (SPI) has been providing high-quality, consistent support from drug discovery to pharmaceutical manufacturing by utilizing the global network of the Sumitomo Corporation Group and the pharmaceutical expertise since its establishment in 1949.

In the field of drug discovery, in particular, SPI independently explores and evaluates domestic and international “research materials and instruments” from the ever-evolving range of research resources. SPI introduce a wide variety of materials, from diverse cell lines and human-derived samples to imaging devices and reagents, to companies and research institutions. In recent years, with the diversification of drug discovery modalities, open innovation with external organizations such as academia and biotech has become more active. By utilizing our strength in the global network, SPI provides various supports such as licensing assistance and agency services for contract research and manufacturing, serving as the bridge between pharmaceutical and life-science related companies both domestically and internationally.

In the field of pharmaceutical development, as attention to Microphysiological Systems (MPS) increases, SPI has built a cell distribution system available for MPS. Leveraging the knowledge and experience accumulated through our official distributor activities for the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), the world’s largest bioresource provider, SPI handles a variety of biological materials. The authenticated cell lines provided by ATCC are widely used worldwide as standard materials, and SPI distributes all importable cell lines as an official distributor. While primary cells face challenges in being used with MPS due to the limitations of culture period, SPI also offers hTERT immortalized cell lines and contract services for the establishment of customized hTERT cell lines to address this issue. To meet various demands, SPI have started partnering with a supplier capable of providing various human organs and tissues, and have begun supplying human-derived materials that can be used not only for research purposes but also for commercial purposes.
